Massimo Vignelli, the creator of Helvetica, wanted to find out how much he could take out of typefaces with it still being readable. The most important typeface to come out of Switzerland was Helvetica. The simpler letter forms made it less cluttered in the designs they were used for. This rise in sans serif fonts was seen during this time. ![]() This style emphasized type not just as letters but making them into forms that are understood by anybody.Īs previously mentioned, the Swiss Style really depends on simplicity and negative space. After World War 2 many countries were opening up trade and it created the need for a style of design that was readable by many people. One of the main reasons for this style was the international trade boom at this time. Many designers who favored this style were coming out of this school which helped to spread it’s influence. The other school was the Zurich School of Applied Arts. The Basel School Of Design was one of the main epicenters for this style, and produced many artists that were working in the style of Swiss Design. The idea of a grid and sans serif fonts really pushed the idea of negative spaces in design. Many designers in Switzerland were interested in simplifying forms and moving away from embellishments. ![]() This style is also known as the International Style, and is centered in Basel and Zurich. This style introduced in the mid 20th century stems out of Switzerland and focuses on cleanliness, simplicity, and minimalism.
